It’s Not the End of the World

The other day, I was putting together a “greatest hits” list for an article of mine. It might seem like a strange time to write something like that, I know. Greatest hits collections are usually published at the very end of a specific period of time such as a year or a decade… or at the very beginning of a new one.

Yet we’re still slogging through 2020, with two solid months to go.

Maybe you can chalk this particular piece as an act of nostalgia: just reminiscing about the “good old days” when we thought nothing about seeing people’s faces uncovered out in public…

When we left a mere foot or two between our fellow shoppers in the grocery store checkout line instead of a fearful six feet or more (as dictated by the large, colorful stickers at our feet)…

When working from home meant we were under the weather instead of under lockdowns…

And when we took for granted that our real estate investment trusts (REITs) were going to get the vast majority of their contracted rental income, if not all of it.

That’s how my article idea began, anyway. But it evolved more and more the longer I worked on it as a reality check took over instead.

You see, we can reminisce about the “good old days” all we want. It doesn’t change the fact that there’s always a flipside: a down to every up and an up to every down.

By that, I mean it’s easy to forget about the negatives of the past when we’re exhausted by the negatives of the present or possible negatives about the future.

Take 2019. Sure, we didn’t have social distancing or worries about the plague. However:

The protests in Hong Kong – which were obviously felt the most severely in Hong Kong itself – set the larger world on edge.
The Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris, France, was set ablaze, destroying significant sections of the 850-year-old building.
The Christchurch massacre happened in New Zealand, and smaller-scale but still soul-scorching acts of hate happened in both El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio.

That’s the short list. There were plenty of other issues 2019 brought with it on global, national, and personal levels. Take your pick.

A Pep Talk You Need to Hear

No matter how we want to remember it, 2019 was far from perfect.

Neither was 2018. Or 2017. Or the year before that. Or the year before that.

In fact, a simple Google search will show that there wasn’t a single 365-day period last decade that went well from start to finish. History has never produced such a thing before, and I’m not going to hold my breath about it happening anytime going forward either.

Clearly, nobody is going to say otherwise about this decade considering its beginning alone.

I’d say it can only get better from this point onward, but I’d rather not jinx anything. Besides, who knows?

2021 could turn out to be utterly amazing! Or it could prove to be more of 2020. Like it or not, we simply can’t tell yet.

With that said, don’t get caught up making lists of all the negative possibilities the rest of this decade could throw our way. You’ll be wasting your time worrying – probably about outcomes that will never manifest anyway.

You’re much better off just building on what we know we have to work with in the present.

Because there really is a lot to work with.

Move Over, Bear Market

How do I know there’s a lot to work with?

For one thing, I’ve been putting my money where my mouth is this whole pandemic period long. And the results have been phenomenal.

For another, I’m still seeing so many unloved stocks with excellent actual prospects going forward. They’re discounted now, but they won’t stay that way for long.

Then there’s this fact: History has proven that every bull market is followed by a bear market. And every bear market is followed by a bull market.

I’ve spent too much time analyzing that trend to doubt it will happen again. In which case, our current circumstances put us in excellent positions to make the future a really great one.

You just wait and see…
