No Santa Claus Rally Today

It’s Christmas week! So let me begin wishing you a wonderful run-up to the holiday, filled with joy and real cheer.

Believe it or not, that is possible despite the market actions this morning (at 6:30 a.m.), with the:

Dow futures down 544 points, or 1.81%
S&P futures down 77.50, or 2.09%
Nasdaq futures down 167.50, or 1.32%.

As of 8:40, they had recovered a small slice of that. But they remain exceptionally far from a Santa Claus rally at last check.

Why? Because a new strain of Covid-19 was identified in the U.K. – one that’s reportedly more infectious than the last. As a result, Europe shut its borders to the U.K., and everyone panicked… overshadowing the “news” that Congress might be at a stimulus bill agreement.

As Yahoo! Finance reported, “Billions were wiped off the FTSE 100 on Monday morning.” And “Stock markets fell sharply around the globe amid fears that the strain could spread internationally.”

The fact that London and many of its fellow big British cities went back into hardcore lockdowns didn’t help with investment fears either. Obviously.

A much lesser deal, but still worth mentioning, is how Apple (AAPL) has temporarily shut its 53 stores in California and 16 in the U.K. And JCPenney is reportedly closing more stores next year under its new Simon (SPG) and Brookfield Asset Management (BAM).

It’s already shuttered 150 out of its 850 locations. And another 15 are slated for the chopping block in 2021. On the plus-side, knowing that now means investors will already have priced those disappointments into related REIT stocks before the new year begins… giving 2021 a better chance to start on a realistically hopeful note.

Speaking of retail landlords, Waffle House CEO Walter Ehmer says his chain has “proven over these nine months we have zero evidence of any spread being traced back to our restaurants for our people or our customers. We’ve traced back all of our infections… and it all traces back to something away from the restaurant.”

This isn’t to say publicly traded REITs will be affected by Waffle House locations staying open or being closed. No offense to them, but REITs normally sign on more prestigious names. But it still is interesting how the larger restaurant industry is coming out to say the same thing.

On the one hand, they have every reason to do so for their own benefit. On the other, considering the seriousness of the situation, they could get in a lot of trouble for lying. So I’m personally inclined to believe them.

In the meantime, sit-down eateries’ loss will continue to be their faster-food competitors’ gain. So don’t expect national (and international) pizza joints like Dominoes, Pizza Hut, and – my go-to – Papa John’s to be hurting too much from here.

I bring that category up because of the big news Papa John’s made the other day: that it will start selling stuffed crust pizza around the country next year. As a former franchisee with several stores, I can’t help but mention that…

And look forward to trying a slice myself as soon as possible.

On Friday, Morningstar upgraded Essex Property Trust (ESS) from a hold to a buy, maintaining its $273 price target on the West Coast apartment owner in the process.
Back on the 18, Blackwells Capital LLC apparently submitted an offer to Monmouth’s (MNR) board of directors for an all-cash offer to purchase the REIT for $18 per share. That represents a 21.6% premium to its unaffected share price on December 1; and it exceeds the unaffected three-month and six-month volume-weighted average prices by 23.8% and 24.8%, respectively. And the larger transaction – which includes assuming all of Monmouth’s outstanding debt – is valued at approximately $3.8 billion.
Postal Realty Trust (PSTL) closed an approximately $30.2 million property-level round of financing on its recently acquired industrial property in Warrendale, Pennsylvania, which amounts to approximately 431,000 square feet. The funding has a 10-year term maturing on January 1, 2031 and carries a 2.8% fixed interest rate.
