A 10%-15% Correction by Year’s End?

Yesterday may have seemed like a painful correction, but that’s just because we’re not used to corrections anymore. We’re used to seeing the markets shake off really bad news left and right.

Really, “shake off” doesn’t come close to describing what we’ve seen over and over again this year. Major U.S. indices – especially the Nasdaq and S&P 500 – have soared repeatedly in the face of negative economic details.

It’s either extremely impressive or extremely insane.

Morgan Stanley Wealth Management Chief Investment Officer Lisa Shalett weighed in on that yesterday, as quoted by MarketWatch:

“The issue is that the markets are priced for perfection and vulnerable, especially since there hasn’t been a correction greater than 10% since the March 2020 low”… The bank’s global investment committee expects a stock-market pullback of 10% to 15% before the end of the year, she wrote.
“The strength of major U.S. equity indexes during August and the first few days of September, pushing to yet more daily and consecutive new highs in the face of concerning developments is no longer constructive in the spirit of ‘climbing a wall of worry,’” said Shalett. “Consider taking profits in index funds,” she said, as stock benchmarks have dismissed “resurgent Covid-19 hospitalizations, plummeting consumer confidence, higher interest rates, and significant geopolitical shifts.”

We’ve seen less euphoria when it comes to Bitcoin this year, though that isn’t saying much. If you’re curious about its latest drop – down 13.4% this morning – that’s because El Salvador decided to accept it as legal tender, only to face some difficulties in implementing that decision.

That’s both from technological and public support perspectives.

Honestly, the recognition that Bitcoin isn’t perfect could arguably make it a better bet than some stocks right now.

Not that I’m recommending it.

The World According to REITs

I always want to present facts over opinions. That’s why I’ll report how AMC (AMC) did over Labor Day weekend.

The embattled movie theater chain said that 2 million+ people went to its U.S. theaters from September 2 to September 5. That trumps 2019’s figures.

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is credited with that turnout, prompting AMC CEO and Chairman Adam Aron to say:

This is the very first weekend that our attendance numbers were ahead of those of the same weekend pre-pandemic since we closed our theaters in March of 2020. This encouraging surge in attendance at AMC signals that, as Hollywood releases movies, Americans eagerly want to return to movie theaters again.

That’s not enough for me to invest much in them or their landlords right now, mind you. But I wanted to share the positive data regardless.

It’s also worth mentioning how the hotel industry might be trending toward a la carte service payments. Guests would pay a cheaper rate for just their room and then extra for amenities like the pool or continental breakfast.

Interesting, right? As are the following real estate investment trust (REIT) updates:

Gladstone Commercial (GOOD) hired Ryan Carter as an executive VP over its midwestern and western acquisitions and existing assets.
Four Corners Property Trust (FCPT) purchased a Firestone property in Illinois for $3.8 million at a 7.6% going-in cash cap rate. The tenant has three years left to its current lease.
Terreno Realty (TRNO) signed two leases – one beginning on September 1 and the other on December 31 – with an omnichannel logistics programs provider for 57,000 square feet at its SoDo Row development in Seattle, Washington. This makes the community 65% leased.
