The Big Banks Speak

It’s Friday and I’m in Spain right now, checking out Realty Income’s (O) latest purchases. This means I’m closing out on my two-country “European tour,” which leaves me slightly sad.

I love my home state of South Carolina. I wouldn’t choose any other place in the world to live.

But that doesn’t mean I can’t recognize beauty elsewhere, and first France and now Spain have some absolutely amazing sights. To say the least.

Tastes too. I told subscribers to my free e-letter, Intelligent REIT Daily, yesterday that I was enjoying the culinary offerings around me a little too much. In my defense though, how can you be in Paris and not?

As such, the treadmill definitely awaits me back home.

I’d say that a whole lot of news also awaits me too, but clearly I’ve stayed on top of things despite my travels. So I already knew what big U.S. banks have said this week.

With all due respect, predicting more volatility ahead is hardly breaking news. Then again, they do have to say a lot of stuff – even the embarrassingly obvious – on earnings calls. So I shouldn’t give them a hard time about that.

I will, however, raise my eyebrows at Morgan Stanley (MS) CEO James Gorman saying that:

“It’s good to be watchful right now. There’s certainly nothing that suggests there are any issues, but markets are bouncing a little bit. And over the next 18 months, we’ll see more of that as the Fed starts to move [to ease economic stimulation policies].”

Considering continuing labor market issues, political dissatisfaction, and international concerns – including in China – the idea that “there’s certainly nothing” to worry about seems overly optimistic.

Though I will completely agree with his first statement.

Let’s stay watchful indeed.

The World According to REITs

It being Friday – and me being in Spain – I’m going to indulge in some market gossip for a moment.

The New York Post ran a story yesterday evening that Goldman Sachs (GS) executives aren’t happy with CEO David Solomon:

“Top brass, including Solomon, have descended from their plush offices on the 41st floor to a grid of cubicles on the 12th…
“In an internal memo announcing the move, Solomon said he wanted executives to be nearer to The Sky Lobby, which is on the 11th floor of Goldman’s 44-story, $2.1 billion glass tower. The lobby is full of couches and coffee for that all-important buzzword of business: collaboration.”

But insiders point out that the chance of interaction between executives and employees remains slim. “The 12th floor is up a spiral staircase, so you have to go upstairs to see anyone… No one is just going to wander by,” a source told the Post.

CatchMark Timber Trust (CTT) reached a definitive agreement with joint-venture partners to redeem its common equity interest in TexMark Timber Treasury for $35 million in cash.
Digital Realty (DLR) agreed to make a strategic investment in European provider AtlasEdge Data Centres. As part of the deal, executive VP Giuliano Di Vitantonio will leave DLR to become CEO of AtlasEdge in January.
Four Corners Property Trust (FCPT) acquired a corporate-operated Aspen Dental property in Arkansas for $1.9 million.
