Another Major Meme-Stock Move

The big market news yesterday probably ended up being from GameStop (GME). It looks like it will, in fact, be launching a non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace.

It originally mentioned the move last year, but Thursday’s statements sent the stock up 30% after hours. That had subsided significantly at last check this morning, but I’m sure meme-stock traders remain excited about the details nonetheless.

I’m also going to take (waste?) time here to mention BMW’s announcement, just because I think it’s kind of – dare I say – “cool.”

The German carmaker debuted the first-ever color-changing car in Las Vegas at the Consumer Electronics Show. BMW research engineer Stella Clarke said the prototype uses E Ink, which is “kind of a thick paper” that’s then stretched across the vehicle.

It’s still a concept car right now, and I don’t know when that will change. Plus, it can currently only switch between black, white, and grey. But the intent is to up the ante with, I believe, more colors and even designs like racing stripes.

I’m not saying it’s the most practical thing ever – although having a white vehicle in the summer and a black one in the winter does have its logical appeal – but hey, “cool” is about immediate appeal, not long-term usefulness.

And immediate appeal can sell very well. As with the NFTs mentioned above.

Moving on, I do have a main story I want to mention. Published on Monday, it’s something I only discovered the other afternoon.

In my defense, I’m not exactly an avid Hollywood Deadline reader. Celebrity news is neither something I have an interest in or time for.

But considering how much I mentioned theater-owning real estate investment trusts (REITs) last year… it only seems fair to provide proper updates. No matter the source.

More Non-REIT (but Still Related) News

The headline in question reads “… The Great Theatrical-Streaming Day & Date Experiment Goes Out Like a Dud in 2021.” And, man, was it an interesting article, starting with the introduction:

Before the pandemic, if there was something studio executives rubbed their hands about, it was the near total eclipse of the theatrical window.
In 2021, for some studios, that dream came true. And as far as 2022 goes, hopefully they’ve learned their lesson from this nightmare that, in Deadline’s annual survey, shows largely diluted box office grosses and lackluster home viewership for major studio theatrical day-and-date movies.

It did next note that older adults still seem theater-shy. So movie executives will likely continue to be more flexible in their approach.

But WarnerMedia, for one, wasn’t happy with the results of its day-and-date Christmas 2020 debut of Wonder Woman 1984. In the end, it cost them too much. So, mere months later, it switched back to a 45-day theaters-only schedule for new releases.

Likewise, Disney’s (DIS) Disney+ experiment with Black Widow resulted in it being pirated over 20 million times. That’s an estimated $600 million loss.

If those illegal viewers would have paid to watch it otherwise, that is. Which is debatable.

Regardless, the lengthy article adds:

With Spider-Man: No Way Home heading to a $1.76 billion global gross and massive theatrical events on deck, box office data [corporation] Gower Analytics projects the domestic box office booming to $9.2 billion, +102%, with global soaring to [$33 billion].
It’s just another reminder to the major studios that if their streaming service business doesn’t work out, they can always go back to making money on the big screen.

And one way or the other, Imax Entertainment President Megan Colligan says, “2022 is going to be a very, very big year.”

The World According to REITs

Terreno Realty (TRNO) ended 2021 with 95.5% occupancy, down from Q3’s 98% and Q4-20’s 97.8%. However, cash rents on new and renewed leases rose 28.4% for the full year. And the company made $326.1 million worth of acquisitions.
Global Net Lease (GNL) made 25 property purchases last year totaling $497 million. Eighty-five percent of those were industrial assets in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and The Netherlands. It also renewed or extended 11 leases, which added about $96 million in net straight-line rent over the new terms.
Braemar Hotels & Resorts (BHR) reported 60% preliminary occupancy last month. Its average daily rate was $494, with revenue per available room (RevPAR) of about $296. That latter number is up 189% over December 2020 and 29% over December 2019.

Finally, yesterday was clearly far kinder to REITs than Wednesday was. We have actual green showing across the entire top 10 movers list.

What a pleasant sight indeed.
