Another Round of Shutdowns Imposed

Today’s biggest news is probably Austria’s decision to shut down again for a 10-day stint – a timeline that could extend to 20 days if the government deems it necessary.

That was supposed to just be for the unvaccinated. But AP reports that, “as virus cases continued to skyrocket, the government said it had no choice but to extend it to everyone.”

As such, beginning Monday, most stores will have to close and most events will have to cancel. School buildings were going to be closed completely too, but that’s changed a bit. While parents are being asked to keep their children at home, they can send them in if necessary.

Then, starting on February 1, vaccinations will become mandatory.

Naturally, that has consumers and investors elsewhere a little jittery this morning on re-opening plays. That’s why the Dow was down again this morning and the Nasdaq up (as of this writing).

Speaking of techie “stuff,” Gokul Hariharan, JPMorgan’s (JOM) co-head of Asia-Pacific technology, media, and telecom research, told CNBC earlier this week that the semiconductor chip shortage should clear up by 2023.

Next year, he admitted, “is a little bit more tricky,” though. The first half of the year could still experience issues. But:

There is capacity coming online, not just from the foundry companies, but also from the [integrated device manufacturer] companies. All the U.S. and European IDMs are also expanding their capacity. A lot of it is slated to come online from the middle of next year onwards.

That’s a good thing for Ford (F), which has set a goal of increasing electric vehicle production to 600,000 vehicles by 2023. And China’s Tesla (TSLA) rival Xpeng should roll out an EV SUV late next year.

These kinds of vehicles are especially chip-dependent.

The World According to REITs

There’s plenty more real estate investment trust (REIT) news out in the last 24 hours. And I’ll list three of them from The Daily REITBeat, as usual.

But here’s a bonus for starters: National Storage Affiliates Trust (NSA) just raised its dividend for the third time this year. The now $0.45 per-share per-quarter payout is 28.6% higher year-over-year and 9.8% higher quarter-over-quarter.

President and CEO Tamara Fischer said:

We are pleased to raise our dividend for the third time this year… The powerful combination of internal and external growth facilitated by our differentiated PRO structure continues to deliver robust returns for shareholders.

Of course, before you go buying into that powerful progress, make sure it’s at a good price. Certain REIT subsectors – such as industrials, self-storage, and data centers – are very much overvalued right now.

That kind of unfettered enthusiasm is rarely if ever a path toward profits. So keep that caution in mind when reading over this blog’s recaps.

Applewood Hospitality REIT (APLE) acquired three hotels for $126 million. Two of them are in Fort Worth, Texas, while the third is in Portland, Oregon.
Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (PEB) announced that, “Hotel demand and future bookings for Q4 2021 and early 2022 began to recover in mid-September and have accelerated into November, following a softening from mid-August to mid-September…” However, it does expect November’s recovering performance “to be lower than October due to normal seasonal weakness, the Thanksgiving holiday, and one less weekend.”
Host Hotels & Resorts (HST) saw Fitch affirm its BBB- long-term issuer default ratings with a revised outlook from negative to stable.

And the same advice applies to the winners and losers from yesterday. There’s always more than one angle to consider before buying or selling a stock.
