Buy the Dip, They Said…

Last Thursday, every equities index from the Dow to the S&P saw landslide losses — and the markets have continued to plummet… Now, many of us are wondering where the bottom will be.

Since Thursday’s steep selloff, the Dow has fallen an additional 1,000 points and the S&P has fallen over 100 points… The tech sector has continued in its collapse and even healthcare has seen better days — well, with the exception of Pfizer, but that’s a different story.

From The Wall Street Journal:

This year, the S&P 500 has fallen 16%, its worst start to a year in nearly a century, and the Nasdaq Composite has dropped 26%. Inflation is at a 40-year high, and the Federal Reserve has embarked on an aggressive monetary tightening cycle, enacting this month its biggest rate increase since 2000. That has fanned worries about a recession—periods when stocks have on average fallen as much as 29%, according to Dow Jones Market Data.
Some of the wildly popular trades of the past two years have already crumbled. Many investors have soured on richly valued technology stocks. Newly minted public companies, which soared last year, have come back down to earth. Highly speculative corners of the market, such as Cathie Wood’s flagship ARK Innovation exchange-traded fund, have plummeted.

Surviving this seemingly unending downturn is going to take a bit of discipline, courage, and vigilance, but it is possible depending on how long you intend to leave your money in the market. I will say this climate isn’t exactly conducive to a quick recovery but there’s no way to tell where we’ll be at tomorrow’s closing bell.

For now, keep your emotions in check — and remember, it’s not a loss until you sell.

Peloton Faces Downhill Conditions

Peloton Interactive Inc. (PTON) just confirmed its quarterly sales are sinking as demand for its connected fitness equipment suffers. It seems as Americans return to their pre-pandemic lifestyles, their priorities have strayed from pedaling for miles on end in front of an iPad.

The household name in smart spinning recently secured $750 million in financing to help support its turnaround bid, yet shares fell 12% in Tuesday morning trading to around $12.42. This put Peloton on a path to close at its lowest level since its 2019 IPO. Before yesterday’s earnings report, the company’s stock was down about 50% year-to-date and 92% from its all-time high.

Sadly, I think Peloton’s pandemic existence may have set it up for both an over-inflated valuation and complacency in the competitive fitness space. With the introduction of an expensive apparel line and accessories like a $45 sweat towel, it seems the company has no shortage of confidence in its brand name… But is it enough? We’ll see.

The World According to REITs

Indus Earnings Show Strength In Logistics Space

Indus Realty Trust, an organization engaged in developing, acquiring, managing, and leasing high-quality industrial and logistics properties, released Q1 earnings yesterday with total revenues to the tune of $11.5 million. Core funds from continuing operations were $4.0 million, or $0.38 per share for Q1 2022 compared to $2.4 million, or $0.39 per share, for Q1 2021.

The company also announced an agreement to acquire approximately 280,000 square feet of industrial space in South Carolina while adding a 91,000-square-foot project in the Lehigh Valley to its development portfolio.

Currently, the stock price sits at around $67 per share, down less than 1% as our market faces the realities of interest rate increases and rapid inflation.

Honestly, I think there’s a lot to like about this company. It seems very selective in its acquisitions and boasts a portfolio filled with modern, sustainably built properties in the logistics space. This name is definitely worth keeping an eye on.
