Dividend Growth Stock of the Week: Bristol-Myers Squibb Company

Last week, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company increased its dividend by 10.2%

This raises the company’s dividend growth streak to a respectable 13 years.

Bristol-Myers Squibb is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, producing a variety of drugs to treat cancer, heart disease, and autoimmune conditions.

Founded in the late 19^th century, Bristol Myers is one of the oldest pharmaceutical companies around. One of the company’s first breakthrough products was Sal Hepatica salts, marketed as a tonic and laxative that mimic the taste and effect of the natural mineral waters of a Bohemian spa. Over the years, the company has produced a wide variety of drugs, including antitoxins and vaccines, over the counter home remedies, penicillin, hair coloring, nutritional products, anti-cancer drugs, and heart medications.

Today, Bristol Myers’ portfolio includes several blockbuster drugs, including Revlimid for multiple myeloma, the anticoagulant Eliquis, Opdivo for a variety of cancers, and Orencia for autoimmune diseases. The company is also launching a number of new products, including Breyanzi for lymphoma, Reblozyl for anemia, Zeposia for multiple sclerosis, and Onureg for acute myeloid leukemia. The company is also quite active in research and development, with over half a dozen drugs in late stage development and over 50 assets in its early stage pipeline.

Over the last decade, Bristol Myers has increased its dividend at a 3.5% compound annual growth rate. However, last year, the company rewarded shareholders with a 9.8% dividend increase, and this year it continued that trend with an increase well above historical rates.

Bristol Myers shares currently pay $0.54 per share in quarterly dividends, which translates to a yield of just over 3.5%. The payout ratio of 27% is safe. Bristol Myers holds an A+ credit rating.

Bristol Myers has also started returning a significant amount of capital to shareholders through its share repurchase program. Though the share count sharply increased in 2019 due to its merger with Celgene, the company has since reduced shares outstanding by 1.7% in the last 2 years, and also just authorized a $15B buyback program, which would reduce shares outstanding by 11% at current prices.

Bristol Myers earnings are fairly stable regardless of economic conditions, as healthcare needs tend to be non-discretionary. However, due to its reliance on patented, brand name medications, the company’s earnings power does fluctuate over the years as it loses exclusivity on blockbuster drugs. Over the last few years, the company’s earnings have increased rapidly due to a few key drugs, as well as its merger with Celgene. However, this growth is expected to slow significantly as merger synergies are completed and the company faces several important patent expirations over the next few years.

So is it worth picking up a few shares of Bristol Myers now? The stock currently trades at under 8X forward earnings. That’s well below its historical average. Over the past two decades, the company has traded at a wide range of valuations, from 11X to 30X. However, over the last few years, the stock has remained relatively stagnant even as earnings increased rapidly, leading to today’s very low multiple. Despite concerns over pending patent expirations, the company has a solid portfolio of drugs and research candidates, a history of dividend growth, and a very reasonable valuation. For these reasons, Bristol Myers could be a solid addition to your dividend growth portfolio.
