Dividend Growth Stock of the Week: Broadridge Financial Solutions

Recently, Broadridge Financial Solutions (BR) raised its dividend by 13.3%.

This brings the company’s dividend growth streak to a solid 16 years.

Though you may not realize it, if you own stocks, you’ve probably read material that was handled by Broadridge Financial Solutions. You see, this company is one of the largest providers of technology for handling investor communications such as proxy materials, regulatory reports, and corporate actions.

Broadridge began as a business unit within Automatic Data Processing (ADP) in 1962. When it was initially formed, the company specialized in processing stock trades for brokerages. By the 1980s, the company had become one of the largest full-service brokerage processors, handling almost 80% of the market. Around this time, Broadridge began offering to handle investor communications for some of its clients. The internet transformed Broadridge’s business, and the company pioneered online proxy voting and digital delivery of shareholder communications. Broadridge went public through a spinoff in 2007 and has continued to innovate in the past decade, adding features such as mobile voting and exploring blockchain solutions.

Today, Broadridge has two major business segments: Investor Communication Solutions, and Global Technology and Operations. Investor Communications represents about 75% of revenues and includes distribution of regulatory materials and customer communications. The remaining 25% serves capital markets and wealth management by processing trades, providing data, and technology solutions to help advisors build relationships with their customers. Nearly two thirds of Broadridge’s revenues come from recurring sources, making it a stable and predictable business.

Over the past 10 years, Broadridge has increased its dividend at an impressive 14.5% compound annual growth rate. This year’s 13.3% increase is in line with the company’s historical rate of increases.

Broadridge shares now pay $0.725 per share in quarterly dividends, which translates to a yield of just over 1.6%. The payout ratio of 41% is safe, and gives room for the company to continue increasing dividends. Broadridge holds a BBB+ credit rating.

Broadridge also regularly repurchases its own shares. Over the past decade, shares outstanding have been reduced by 4.3%.

Broadridge’s earnings are not sensitive to the economic environment, as the technology solutions it provides are critical pieces of the financial markets. No matter what happens, companies still need to complete regulatory filings and communicate with shareholders, making Broadridge’s business very resilient. Analysts expect the company to continue growing at a high single digit rate.

So is it worth picking up a few shares of Broadridge now? The stock currently trades at roughly 25X forward earnings. That’s higher than its historical average of 22 times earnings over the past decade. However in recent years the company has regularly traded at 25X-30X multiples. Given the company’s resilient business with strong growth, it’s worth keeping an eye on this dividend grower for a chance to add it to your portfolio on a dip.
