Dividend Growth Stock of the Week: Carlisle Companies

Last week, Carlisle Companies (CSL) increased its dividend by 38.9%.

This brings the company’s dividend growth streak to an outstanding 46 years.

Do you like shopping? If you’re out and about visiting stores, there’s a good chance you’re stepping foot in a building made with materials produced by Carlisle Companies. Carlisle is a diversified industrial conglomerate that has many different businesses, but some of its largest segments produce commercial roofing and building insulation materials.

Carlisle Companies was founded in 1917 as the Carlisle Tire and Rubber Company, which produced inner tubes for bicycle wheels. Over the years, the company grew by acquiring other companies, expanding into brakes and construction vehicles and later into wires and cables. In the 1960s, the company developed a synthetic rubber called Sure-Seal, which would eventually grow into its modern day roofing materials business. The company began expanding internationally in the 1990s and has continued to grow its businesses through mergers and acquisitions.

Today, Carlisle operates in three major segments: Construction Materials, Weatherproofing Technologies, and Interconnect/Fluid Technologies. Construction Materials is the company’s largest segment, representing 60% of revenues. This business primarily produces commercial roofing materials. The Weatherproofing segment produces insulation, waterproofing products and air and vapor barriers. The Interconnect/Fluid segment produces parts for aircraft and medical equipment as well as equipment for auto manufacturing and general industrial products.

Over the last decade, Carlisle has increased its dividend at an above average 11.8% compound annual growth rate. This year’s 38.9% increase is much larger than usual compared to its historical rate of dividend increases.

Carlisle shares now pay $0.75 per share in quarterly dividends, which translates to a yield just under 1.0%. The payout ratio of 15% is very safe. Carlisle holds a credit rating of BBB.

Carlisle also recently began repurchasing a significant amount of shares. Over the last 10 years, shares outstanding have decreased by about 16.5%.

Carlisle earnings are somewhat sensitive to economic conditions, as its major business segments are tied to the construction industry. However a significant portion of its sales are for repair and replacement, which provides some stability. It also supplies the automotive industry which can be cyclical. But it does have some diversification in the aerospace and medical industries which are more stable. The company’s earnings more than doubled this year due to an acquisition and strong demand in the construction materials business. Over the long term, the company has grown at a low double digit rate, but analysts are forecasting a slowdown to high single digit growth in the near term.

So is it worth picking up a few shares of Carlisle now? The stock currently trades at slightly over 14X forward earnings. That’s below its historical average of roughly 18X earnings over the past decade. However, the company recorded record profits this year and it remains to be seen if this new level of earnings is sustainable. Still, the company has an impressive record of earnings and dividend growth, and is a good candidate to consider adding to your dividend growth portfolio.
