Dividend Growth Stock of the Week: Hormel Foods Corporation

Last week, Hormel Foods Corporation (HRL) increased its dividend by 6.1%.

This brings the company’s dividend growth streak to an incredible 55 years.

What does SPAM stand for? Nobody really knows, but according to Hormel, it was simply the result of a naming contest for the now-ubiquitous canned pork product. Though Spam may be the company’s most (in)famous product, Hormel is a consumer staples giant that sells meat products such as ham and turkey as well as snack foods.

Hormel was founded in 1891, in Austin, Minnesota as a supplier of fresh pork products. The company introduced the first canned ham in 1926, and later, Spam in 1937. Over the years, the company expanded internationally and acquired new businesses to diversify its portfolio. Today, Hormel owns a number of recognizable brands, including Skippy, Spam, Natural Choice, Applegate, Justin’s, Jennie-O, Herdez, Black Label, and of course, the eponymous Hormel. The company also just completed the acquisition of the Planters brand.

The company operates in four segments: Grocery Products, Refrigerated Products, Jennie-O Turkey Store, and International.

Over the last decade, Hormel has increased its dividend at a staggering 16% compound annual growth rate, in part due to an increasing payout ratio. However in recent years, the company’s dividend increases have been getting slightly smaller. This year’s 6.1% increase is smaller than usual compared to its historical rate of dividend increases.

Hormel shares now pay $0.26 per share in quarterly dividends, which translates to a yield of just over 2.4%. The payout ratio of 53% is reasonable for a consumer staples company. Hormel holds an A credit rating.

Hormel has historically had a strong share repurchase program. However, in recent years, the share count has been creeping up to pay for the company’s acquisitions.

Hormel’s earnings tend to be fairly stable regardless of economic conditions, as there tends to be steady demand for its products and due to its brand power. However, recently the company has had a few years of declining earnings due to the pandemic shifting demand from its traditional foodservice channels to retail business. Inflation has also kept pressure on margins even as the company passes on price increases. However, analysts expect Hormel’s earnings to rebound by 15% next year, helped by the recent Planters acquisition. Over the longer term, company earnings are expected to grow by mid to high single digits.

So is it worth picking up a few shares of Hormel now? The stock currently trades at around 22X forward earnings. That’s in line with its historical average over the past decade, though the company has traded from as low as 19X earnings to as high as 30X earnings. With its long history of dividend growth, and its steady, dependable business, Hormel is a strong candidate for dividend growth portfolios and it’s reasonable to pick up a few shares of the company while it’s trading at a fair value.
