Dividend Growth Stock of the Week: Stanley Black & Decker

Last week, Stanley Black & Decker (SWK) increased its dividend by 1.3%.

This brings the company’s dividend growth streak to a very remarkable 55 years.

Stanley Black & Decker is an industrial company known for producing power tools and equipment. As you might guess from its name, the company owns the Stanley and Black and Decker brands of power tools. But, the company also produces a number of other well-known brands you may be aware of, such as Dewalt and Craftsman.

The origins of Stanley Black & Decker date back to 1843 when it was founded as The Stanley Works, a company producing bolts and hinges. The company eventually diversified into hand tools and hardware, and even developed the first automatic door opener. The Stanley Works went public in 1966. In 2010, the company merged with Black & Decker, becoming the world’s largest tools and storage company.

Stanley Black and Decker produces power tools for every segment of the market, from the casual consumer to professional and industrial customers. In recent years the company has continued to expand its portfolio through innovation and acquisitions. One trend that has been playing out has been the increasing diversity of power tools and electrification of traditionally gas powered tools such as lawn mowers and chain saws.

Over the last decade, Stanley Black & Decker has increased its dividend at a solid 6.2% compound annual growth rate. However in recent years, the dividend growth rate has slowed considerably and in 2020 the company only raised its dividend by a single penny. This year’s 1.3% increase is once again smaller than usual compared to its historical rate of dividend increases.

Stanley Black & Decker shares now pay $0.80 per share in quarterly dividends, which translates to a yield of just under 2.8%. The payout ratio of 33% is safe. Stanley Black & Decker holds an A credit rating.

Stanley Black & Decker has historically had an active share repurchase program, but recently the company has issued some shares to pay for acquisitions. Over the last 10 years, shares outstanding have decreased by about 6%.

Stanley Black & Decker earnings are fairly sensitive to economic conditions, as much of the demand for its products comes from consumer purchases of power tools for home projects. Estimates for the company’s earnings this year have fallen significantly to -6% due to a combination of slowing demand due to rising interest rates and higher production costs due to inflation. However, the company is expected to continue growing through acquisitions and secular trends of e-commerce and electrification. Going forward, analysts expect company earnings to grow by low double digits over the next few years.

So is it worth picking up a few shares of Stanley Black & Decker now? The stock currently trades at slightly under 12X forward earnings. That’s a valuation that’s typically only seen during recessions, while the stock usually trades at a 15X-18X multiple. With 55 years of dividend growth, Stanley Black & Decker has weathered more than 7 major recessions while constantly increasing its commitment to shareholders. Although this year’s small dividend increase is disappointing, it is a prudent decision in light of the uncertain economic environment. While the company may struggle a bit in the short term, it is very likely to continue this impressive streak and come out stronger on the other side, making this an opportune time to add this dividend grower to your portfolio.
