Dividend Growth Stock of the Week: Stryker Corporation

Last week, Stryker Corporation (SYK) increased its dividend by 10.3%.

This raises the company’s dividend growth streak to an impressive 29 years.

Hopefully you won’t ever need to go to the hospital, but if you do, there’s a pretty decent chance that some of the equipment used to help fix you up are produced by Stryker. Stryker is one of the largest medical technology companies, producing a variety of equipment for medical procedures.

Stryker was founded in 1941 by Dr. Homer Stryker, an orthopedic surgeon who invented a device to allow caregivers to turn patients with serious back injuries while keeping the spine immobilized. Another important product in the company’s early years was an oscillating saw used to cut through casts. The business was initially known as The Orthopedic Frame Company, and later changed its name to Stryker in 1964. Stryker went public in 1979. In the decades to follow, the company rapidly expanded and diversified its portfolio with a number of acquisitions. Today, Stryker operates in 2 main segments: MedSurg and Neurotechnology, and Orthopaedics and Spine.

Stryker is constantly innovating and acquiring new technologies to develop new products. Important areas of focus for the company include acute and emergency care, endoscopy, surgical and orthopedic instruments, neurocranial and neurovascular technologies, joint replacements, and spine technologies. Recent acquisitions include OrthoSensor for sensor technology in total joint replacement, Wright Medical for medical devices focused on extremities and biologics, and Gauss Surgical, for an AI platform used to monitor blood loss during surgery.

Over the last decade, Stryker has increased its dividend at an impressive 14.4% compound annual growth rate. In recent years, it has slowed down at bit to a dividend growth rate that is slightly over 10% annually. This year’s 10.3% increase is in line with recent dividend increases.

Stryker shares now pay $0.695 per share in quarterly dividends, which translates to a yield of just under 1.1%. The payout ratio of 27% is safe. Stryker holds an A- credit rating.

Stryker’s earnings are usually fairly predictable, regardless of economic conditions, as healthcare needs are often a high priority. However, the pandemic did cause a rare dip in earnings as elective medical procedures were delayed due to the strain on the healthcare system. Analysts are currently forecasting 12% growth in 2022. Over the longer term, Stryker has grown at high single digit to low double digit rates.

So is it worth picking up a few shares of Stryker now? The stock currently trades at slightly over 25 times forward earnings. That’s a bit above its historical average of 20-22 times earnings over the past decade. Though the company may deserve a slight premium due to its history of steady, above average growth in a highly defensive and predictable industry, it may be prudent to wait for a more favorable valuation and margin of safety. Regardless, Stryker is a solid dividend growth name to keep on your watchlist, due to the company’s long history of steady earnings and dividend growth.
