Dividend Growth Stock of the Week: Whirlpool Corporation

Last week, Whirlpool Corporation (WHR) increased its dividend by 25%.

This raises the company’s dividend growth streak to a solid 12 years.

Have you done any cooking lately? Dishes? How about laundry? If so, you may be using appliances manufactured by Whirlpool, which sells products under brands such as KitchenAid, Maytag, and the eponymous Whirlpool.

Whirlpool traces its roots back to the Upton Machine Company, which was founded in 1911 and produced electric wringer-washers. The company later merged with the Nineteen Hundred Washer Company in 1929, and adopted the Whirlpool name in 1949. Over the years, the company has grown into a global manufacturer of laundry, refrigeration, dishwashing, and cooking appliances.

Today, Whirlpool gets most of its sales from North America, which represents 58% of revenue. But international sales are also significant, with 22% from Europe, 13% from Latin America, and 7% from Asia.

The company’s largest product category is refrigeration, which represents 30% of sales, followed closely by laundry (28%) and cooking (25%). Dishwashing and spare parts make up the remainder of sales.

Appliance manufacturing is a competitive and mature industry, with expected growth in the mid-single digits. In recent years, Whirlpool has been working to maintain its market share while increasing its margins by improving efficiency.

Whirlpool has paid a dividend for over 75 years. Over the last decade, Whirlpool has increased its dividend at a 10.9% compound annual growth rate. In recent years, its dividend growth rate has slowed down a bit. This year’s 25% raise is much larger than usual.

Whirlpool shares now pay $1.75 per share in quarterly dividends, which translates to a yield of just over 3.4%. The payout ratio of 25% is safe. The company targets a payout ratio of 30%. Whirlpool holds a BBB credit rating.

Whirlpool also has an active share repurchase program. Over the past decade, shares outstanding have been reduced by approximately 25%. The company has currently authorized approximately $3.5B in repurchases, which could retire 29% of shares outstanding at current prices.

Whirlpool earnings are somewhat sensitive to economic conditions, as the company’s sales are somewhat tied to housing and discretionary spending. However, a large portion of sales are replacements for aging appliances which are steadier and more predictable. The company is also affected by material and wage inflation. The pandemic caused a sharp increase in earnings for the company, but analysts are currently forecasting low to mid-single digit growth moving forward.

So is it worth picking up a few shares of Whirlpool now? The stock currently trades at roughly 7.5 times forward earnings. That’s much cheaper than its historical average of around 11X over the past decade, though the stock has traded from as low as 5X to as high as 18X earnings from time to time. Though the company’s dividend growth streak may be somewhat short, it has never cut its dividend payout. It may be reasonable to consider adding Whirlpool to your dividend growth portfolio.
