Green energy is a wonderful thing – until the elements that power it decides to stop cooperating.

That’s not trash talk against the movement, for the record. There’s a lot of good being done with it and a lot of legitimate investor money being made in the process today (unlike, perhaps, back in the days of scamming Solyndra).

But this cold freeze so many parts of the U.S. are experiencing right now is intense enough that wind turbines are icing over… in Texas.

The Lone Star State isn’t exactly known for its chilly winters. Parts of it are literal desert, after all.

I honestly can’t tell you if any of those areas are getting precipitation right now. But 2.5 million to 3.5 million residents overall don’t have power right now thanks in part to about half of their wind turbines freezing over.

On the plus side, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas says that those units still operating are spinning at higher rates than expected. Even so, that only stems the problem. It doesn’t even come close to eliminating it.

All of this leads us to the astounding fact that renewable energy apparently consists of almost a fifth of the net electricity generated in Texas. A fifth!

That’s intense, especially for a place known as the home of hundreds and thousands of oil wells.

Considering how my team and I cover many master limited partnerships (MLPs) along with REITs and other dividend-paying stocks, I find every bit of that information very worth sharing.

Incidentally, for all of you in Texas, I’m hoping for a very speedy return to full power and plenty of heat!

Now let’s take a turn northward to New York, which seems to have much better news to share. As reported by The New York Post:

“With a stubborn coronavirus pandemic, consistent shutdowns, a terrifying spike in crime, and people who are swapping the Big Apple for the suburbs, the once-bustling city has been rather quiet.
“But… the first signs the city is making a comeback have appeared, with Manhattan and Brooklyn lease signings seeing the highest surge in the past 13 years.
“In the latest Douglas Elliman report, the month of January was uncommonly animated in both boroughs – with the most number of new leases signed since the financial crisis. This would mark the fourth consecutive month where landlords have seen gains in tenants.”

Moreover, Mansion Global and other sources say that Manhattan’s luxury market is taking off too, with “a whopping 38 high-end homes” priced at $4 million or more going “into contract last week.”

That’s a better week than it had in bustling and booming 2019. In fact, it’s the highest week it’s had in five years.

Kinda makes my speculative bets on New York City REITs seem a little less crazy after all, huh?

The World According to Commercial Real Estate

Since the markets are up and running again today, we’re back to the earnings grind. Specifically, we (and the Daily REITBeat) would like to make the following notable announcements:

The GEO Group (GEO) announced fourth-quarter adjusted funds from operations, which came in at $0.62 per share. As 2021’s AFFO guidance, it now projects $1.98-$2.08 per share, adding that it ended last year with $283.5 million in cash on hand and about $136 million in borrowing capacity, not to mention its $450 million senior credit facility accordion feature.
NexPoint Residential Trust (NXRT) reported Q4-20 core FFO of $0.56 per share, offering midpoint guidance for 2021 at $2.25. It’s same-store properties for the full year saw average effective rent rise 1.4%, total revenue jump 3.6%, and net operating income bump up by 3.2%. Though occupancy did take a hit.
SL Green (SLG) signed a contract to sell its 25% interest in commercial condominium building 55 West 46th Street for a gross valuation of $275 million. The buyer is Brookfield Asset Management (BAM).

Oh, and let’s go back to Hawaii for a moment. (Can I get an “Amen!”?)

Also making its presence known is Power REIT (PW), which was up 27% in one week:
