Free iPhones and Chinese REITs

There’s a host of interesting information out there today, including how one McDonald’s (MCD) location somewhere in the U.S. may or may not be offering bonus iPhones to new hires who stay on for six months.

How is that for an information-laden yet not entirely informative sentence?

Here’s the scoop from Fox Business:

“A McDonald’s restaurant might be offering iPhones to new hires.
“That’s at least what one hiring sign says, according to a Twitter user who snapped a picture of a red and yellow poster from outside the store.
“The photo, captured by @Brogawd_, was shared Sunday evening…
“It is currently unclear which McDonald’s location this hiring sign belongs to – if it is legitimate. Nor is it clear whether the location is corporate or franchise-owned.
“However, the global fast-food chain is competing with other restaurants that are hiring nationwide.”

Considering the $1,000 signing bonuses some unskilled competitors are offering, I’m not so sure I don’t believe the iPhone incentive. But that’s just me.

In other news, market-research firm Cardify says the unvaccinated are spurring economic activity more so than the vaccinated. The latter are “proceeding with cautious optimism,” CEO Derrick Fung added. “They’re still not really comfortable doing live entertainment where there’s crowds of people.”

Their unvaccinated counterparts are much more going about relatively normal lives at this point. Though Fung thinks the summer will see a rise in everyone getting out and about.

For their part, the filthy rich seem to have been spending for months. I’m not sure if that’s been online or offline, but luxury brand owner Bernard Arnault has reaped the rewards either way. He’s now the world’s richest man, with $0.3 billion more than Jeff Bezos.

We’ll see how long that lasts…

The World According to REITs

Here’s some big REIT-specific news to share: It looks like China will finally start offering REITs. Millionacres writes that:

“… the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) shared its first round of approvals of China’s public REITs. These nine REITs, [which] have been authorized to raise 30 billion yuan ($4.7 billion), will own and invest in real estate directly related to China’s infrastructure systems, including the improvement, management, and development of industrial parks and warehouses, roadways, sewage systems, airports, and garbage facilities…”

These investment vehicles, however, “will be managed and traded through a mutual fund that then invests in asset-backed securities that indirectly hold the infrastructure projects.”

Is that worth exploring? There are reasons to say yes and say no.

So stay tuned. I doubt I’ll be actively recommending Chinese REITs anytime soon, even if they do debut this fall. However, I’ll be paying attention to the rollout regardless.

For now, here’s what some of our much more established U.S. entities are doing:

Tanger Factory Outlet Centers (SKT) announced that its board authorized it to repurchase up to $80 million worth of its common shares through May 31, 2023, after its previous authorization for the same amount expired this month.
Armada Hoffler Properties (AHH) signed Transamerica to the entire 35,000 square-foot eighth floor of its Will Wharf office building in Baltimore, Maryland, which is now 58% leased.
American Assets Trust (AAT) agreed to purchase Eastgate Office Park in Bellevue, Washington, for $125 million. The multi-tenant campus is 95% leased with a three-year weighted average lease term.

As for the information below, you won’t hear a peep of commentary out of me. The percentages were what they were yesterday, and they’ll be what they’ll be today.

That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.
