Inflation Rises and So Do Company “Alternatives”

Today is filled with fascinating news, including how, last quarter, Tyson Foods (TSN) raised its average price for:

Pork by 39%
Beef by 12%
Chicken by 16%.

As Executive Vice President and CFO Stewart F. Glendinning said on the company’s Q3 earnings call:

“We performed well despite a challenging operating environment that [spanned] tough labor availability, significant inflationary pressures on raw material costs, global supply chain challenges, and evolving demand backdrop.”

And CEO and President Donnie King was even more blunt about it. He says Tyson is dealing with “accelerating and unprecedented inflation.” As such, they’re planning on raising at least retail prices again next month.

That’s a common story right now.

So is that other factor Glendinning mentioned: “tough labor availability.” U.S. job openings spiked in June, we now officially know, by 590,000 to 10.073 million. And the Labor Department also had to issue new May numbers, which were higher by 274,000 than initially reported.

In other “new norm” news, stay-at-home exercise company Peloton (PTON) is taking advantage of all those small fitness centers and studios that had to close last year – many of which will never open again. Its sales went way up last year and soared another 141% January-March 2020.

Buoyed by those numbers, it’s betting on more growth going forward by breaking ground on its first U.S. factory. Though, considering its elitist prices, I’m not willing to bet that all gyms will go under. Not on the Peloton factor alone.

Besides, there are still some people out there who enjoy the experience of actually being around others. That “shows” (Get it? Get it?) in AMC Entertainment’s (AMC) much better-than-expected earnings per share loss of $0.71 for the second quarter – versus the -$0.94 estimate – and $444.7 million in revenue versus the expected $382.25 million.

The World According to REITs

I have to stress again here before I write another word that AMC is still a risky stock to hold. It still lost money, not netted it.

However, I am interested in seeing how its Bitcoin decision goes. These theaters will begin accepting it for online ticket purchases and concessions nationwide by year’s end.

This announcement comes right as Congress seeks to regulate cryptocurrency, something Senator Ted Cruz went viral condemning yesterday. He says they don’t understand it and therefore have no business meddling with it until they do.

Personally, I think he has a case there. Though I’ll take his basic advice from here and turn to the real estate investment trusts (REITs) that are my expertise:

Vornado Realty Trust (VNO) reported total Q2 revenue of $376.4, up 45.9% year-over-year. Net income rose from $229.4 million ($0.47 per share) to $300.7 million ($0.54). Funds from operations (FFO) were $300.7 million ($0.54) compared to $229.4 million ($0.47). And adjusted FFO (AFFO) was up 45.3% to $256.1 million ($0.46).
Seritage Growth Properties (SRG) recorded a net loss of $74.1 million, or $1.73 per share, for Q2. Total net operating income was $7.6 million, and its FFO was -$33.9 million, or -$0.61 per share. The company had cash on hand of $147.2 million at the end of the quarter.
National Health Investors (NHI) saw Q2-21 net income of $0.85, down 14.1% year-over-year. And normalized FFO was down 20.5% to $1.16. This was “as expected,” according to CEO Eric Mendelsohn, due to “higher levels of deferrals, which increased to $9.9 million from $4.2 million in the first quarter.”
