L Brands Cuts Ties With This Bombshell Company

I’ll mention the “breaking news” about the Senate unveiling a $1 trillion version of its infrastructure bill.

But that’s it. That’s my mention.

There’s too much other information out there that demands my immediate attention. Congress’ “she loves me, she loves me not” musings are worth knowing about… but I’m not going to waste time speculating about their speculations until something is more definitive.

In other words… moving on.

This brings me to the mall REIT-related L Brands. We’ve known it was troubled for a while now. But the Bath & Body Works and Victoria’s Secret owner is officially splitting up. Here’s what you need to know, courtesy of Fox Business:

“… L Brands… stock symbol will officially change its name to Bath & Body Works, Inc. The stock, which currently trades under the ticker symbol LB, will begin trading under the ticker symbol BBWI on Monday.
“Victoria’s Secret will separate from the company, becoming its own publicly traded entity. The separation will be achieved through distribution of 100% of the shares of Victoria’s Secret to holders of L Brands common stock, which is expected to be completed after market’s close on Tuesday. L Brands stockholders will receive one share of Victoria’s Secret common stock for every three shares of L Brands common stock held at the close of business as of July 22.
“Following the distribution of Victoria’s Secret common stock, the lingerie giant will begin trading on Tuesday under the ticker symbol VSCO.”

Other than those individuals though, I’m not sure who’s going to invest in the much-damaged Victoria’s Secret brand. I know I won’t be.

Really, as-is, I think its only hope of short-term success is if it becomes a meme stock.

The World According to REITs

I really like this quote from Aaron Levie:

“Companies have never won. You’re always either fighting for survival or fighting for relevance.”

It describes Victoria’s Secret’s situation intensely. Once one of the hottest retail companies around, the brand has fallen out of favor as culture shifted…

And it didn’t.

The company has always touted itself as empowering women. Whether it was or wasn’t isn’t the question. The perception was there, and that perception made it lots and lots of money.

But today, consumers’ attitude has changed drastically thanks to innovative ideas, individuals, and companies. They saw an opportunity to make their own money by taking Victoria’s Secret down a peg or two.

And they went for it. Successfully.

That kind of action is why I’m not just interested in the real estate investment trust (REIT) earnings that come out four times a year. I’m rarely disappointed when “all” I have to report is the day-to-day transactions that lead up to those earnings.

They’re every bit as important to stay aware of. So here are three tidbits today… with another three over at Intelligent REIT Daily.

Diversified Healthcare Trust (DHC) signed a new management agreement with Stellar Senior Living for 10 properties – nine skilled nursing and one continuing care retirement community – across Colorado, Texas, and Wyoming.
Monmouth Real Estate Investment (MNR) took possession of a 143,794 square foot industrial building in Burlington, Vermont, for $54.8 million… even as the Equity Commonwealth (EQC) merger war continues.
CareTrust REIT (CTRE) acquired a 119-bed skilled nursing facility in Austin, Texas, and another 122 beds in Cedar Park, Texas.

Then again, the month-to-month matters too…
