More Drops in an Already Full Bucket

“At Least 42 Dead After Ida Batters Northeast With Record Rain and Floods,” CNBC reported yesterday afternoon. Twenty-three of those casualties were in New Jersey, parts of which are still dramatically flooded.

It and New York are under states of emergency, as swollen rivers could cause more flooding still.

In many ways, 2021 has been easier to handle than 2020. In others, however, I’m sure many are wondering how much more they can take.

In the midst of all this, the August jobs report came out this morning with excessively worse-than-expected data. Non-farm payrolls went up 235,000 instead of the expected 733,000 and July’s 943,000.

As Yahoo Finance adds:

As of July, the civilian labor force was still down by more than 3.1 million members since February 2020. And the economy has shed a net total of 5.7 million payrolls since the start of the pandemic, with these losses getting recovered at a sluggish pace compared to the swift drop in jobs during the spring last year.

Then there’s the Ford (F) news. Sales declined 33.1% last month year-over-year thanks to the continuing semiconductor chip shortage around the world.

I can’t say CNBC (in a different article) was unwarranted to say the issue is “wreaking havoc on the automotive industry.”

Analysts thought they had factored in supply problems, predicting 13.1 million to 14.4 million vehicles sold. And, in their defense, they weren’t off by much. But at 13.09 million sales, August’s figure is still the worst it’s been since June 2020 and noticeably down from April 2021’s peak of 18.5 million.

Even more concerning is how August is usually one of the industry’s best months. Yet Honda (HMC) and Subaru – both of which also report monthly sales – also posted double-digit losses.

The World According to REITs

REITs were pretty active again yesterday, with some particularly “interesting” news coming out about a favorite. You’ll see what I mean with our third and final update below.

For that matter, the second entry is fairly attention grabbing as well…

PS Business Parks (PSB) completed its buyout of industrial park Port America in Dallas, Texas, for $123 million. The property consists of 15 buildings, and 717,735 square feet, with average leasing spaces of 8,000 square feet per customer.
Sunstone Hotel Investors (SHO) immediately appointed board chairman Douglas M. Pasquale as its interim CEO. This is in response to former president and CEO John Arabia resigning as company director, also effective immediately, though he will stay with the company until a permanent successor is named.
Invitation Homes (INVH) says it received a letter from the FTC asking about how it conducts business in general and, more specifically, how it’s handled/handling operations since the shutdowns began.

INVH did drop on the news yesterday, though not enough to make the Down list. With that said, I will be keeping an eye out for more news about what’s going on here.
