My Business Trip Next Week Will Be Booked!

I’m going on a business trip this next week myself. So wish me luck!

This time, I’ll be flying to France, where I’ll be doing business-y things such as seeing:

The Louvre
The Eiffel Tower
The Gardens of Trocadero
The Luxembourg Garden
Notre Dame
The Palace of Versailles.

All for strict business purposes. Clearly.

I also hope to take a walking tour of Monmartre, a bohemian district where artists like Van Gogh and Pissarro once lived and worked. Maybe visit Claude Monet’s allegedly exquisite home an hour and a half outside of Paris. And perhaps take a boat tour on the Seine River too.

All in a week’s work!

What can I say? I just give and I give.

In all seriousness, I do plan on visiting at least a few of those places while I’m out and about. It would be a serious shame if I didn’t.

But I really am going for business purposes to meet up with some potential investors. And while I’m at it, I might take a hop, skip, and a jump away over to Spain to scope out Realty Income’s (O) latest purchases.

That’s my personal news of the day. Now let’s see what’s going on elsewhere…

Debt, Taxes, and Driving to Texas

First off, the debt crisis is (likely) averted, government-style… meaning the can has been kicked down the road yet again.

Senate Democrats and 11 Republicans – including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell – voted for a $480 billion bill that will fund the government through at least early December. So the measure is now in the House’s hands.

Speaking of spending, remember how Jeff Bezos said in April he supported raising the corporate tax rate?

Surprisingly, he might not have completely meant that. Or perhaps he only meant it on the federal level.

Either way, Amazon (AMZN) could be looking for a new corporate headquarters outside of Seattle due to local-level government disagreements.

The tension may have begun in 2018, when Seattle wanted to charge employers $275 per year per employee that made $20 million or more. To fight homelessness. Which would have cost Amazon $60 million annually.

Fox Business reports:

The company, which employs more than 50,000 people in the region, responded by threatening to stop construction on its downtown buildings at the time. After pressure from business groups, the council repealed the measure.

Instead, they built a homeless shelter themselves, which no doubt costs significantly less than $60 million and is probably tax deductible.

It’s that kind of double-speak (or lack thereof) that gives fellow billionaire – and consistent competitor for world’s richest man – Elon Musk an appealing edge to so many. He’s officially moving Tesla’s (TSLA) headquarters from Palo Alto, California, to Austin, Texas.

The man hasn’t exactly been shy about his dislike for what he labels overbearing government regulations. So he’s only putting his money where his mouth is.

There are many reasons to disagree and even disapprove of the man, to be sure. But at least hypocrisy doesn’t seem to be his biggest failing.

The World According to REITs

The jobs report is due today, but it’s not out yet as I compose this. I know that experts are making their predictions, but considering how their predictions have been so wrong so many times…

I can’t say I’m in the mood to join in on the speculating. It will be what it will be, and we’ll deal with it accordingly.

For now, here’s three of your five Daily REITBeat real estate investment trust updates:

Physicians Realty Trust (DOC) priced $500 million of 2.625% senior unsecured notes due 2031. The proceeds will go toward repaying current debt such as that under its credit agreement, and for general corporate purposes.
Terreno Realty (TRNO) hit 98% occupancy by the end of Q3-21, up from 97.5% in Q2. Its cash rents also increased 34.9%, and it made $167.1 million in acquisitions for the three-month period.
Healthcare Trust of America (HTA) signed a third amended and restated $1.3 billion agreement. The contract includes $1 billion on a revolving credit facility and a $300 million term loan, and will bring HTA’s borrowing costs down while extending maturity to October 2025.

As for our biggest winners and losers yesterday, I always like to see the ups up more than the downs are down.
