Tech Stocks Take Some Hits

Let’s talk tech stocks today. Because that seems to be the biggest topic when you add up how many individual companies made headlines in the past 24 hours.

For instance, Cathie Wood’s celebrity-status ARK Investment Management bought 1.1 million Twitter (TWTR) shares on Tuesday through two different ETFs.

Her company was already one of its largest shareholders. But apparently she saw the stock dropping 4% to a November 2020 low as another opportunity to buy.

I do respect that action in theory. But I can’t say I’ll be following in Wood’s footsteps, sticking with bargain real estate investment trusts (REITs) instead.

Of course, Twitter wasn’t doing so bad compared to Alibaba (BABA), which fell to $127.53 yesterday, a four-year-low. At last check, it was recovering a bit this morning, along with the rest of the market.

And Facebook – excuse me. Meta Platforms (FB) – didn’t have the best day either. Its shares slid 4.01% to $324.46. That might seem excessive considering how 1) most tech stocks should weather any impending shutdowns just fine and 2) the larger Nasdaq only slid 1.55%.

But it makes more sense when we learn how the U.K. just blocked Facebook’s – excuse me. Meta Platforms’ – Giphy acquisition. Saying that the deal suppresses competition, it’s ordered the tech giant to sell the platform off altogether.

Last but not least on the tech front, Cyber Monday sales actually went down this year, and by 1.4%. As it turns out, U.S. consumers shelled out a “mere” $10.7 billion on the allotted online shopping day.

Before we brick-and-mortar investors crow too loudly though, remember that many people have been buying Christmas presents for weeks now. Heeding supply chain warnings, plenty of consumers probably just did their online shopping earlier.

Then again, maybe they’re just not buying as much all around?

The World According to REITs

I ask that question because of the consumer confidence index, which dropped from 111.6 in October to 109.5 in November. That was a bit worse than the 110 economists were expecting.

(Incidentally, welcome to the last month of the year!)

In the survey, only 17% of consumers labeled business conditions as being good. And fewer people expect to purchase a home, a car, or major appliances in the next six months.

Everyone – who I’ve read, at least – acknowledges that this is due to inflation. Even Federal Reserve Chief Jerome Powell told the Senate Banking Committee yesterday that high inflation will continue into mid-2022.

He added:

“So I think the word transitory has different meanings to different people. To many, it carries a time, a sense of short-lived. We tend to use it to mean that it won’t leave a permanent mark in the form of higher inflation. I think it’s probably a good time to retire that word and try to explain more clearly what we mean.”

Probably a good time indeed.

We’ve only got one REIT announcement to make, and that would be from Weyerhaeuser Company (WY). It just appointed David Graham as president of Weyerhaeuser Company Limited, its wholly owned Canadian subsidiary, effective January 1. Current president Fred Dzida will stay with the company through March 2022 to assist with the transition.
