The Fed Calls the Shots

You don’t have to look far to find out why the markets weren’t happy yesterday – or why they’re down again so far this morning.

Details from last month’s Federal Reserve meeting were released Wednesday. And it appears it at least was seriously considering reducing its $120 billion in monthly Treasury and mortgage bond purchases by the end of the year.

Admittedly, those chit-chats happened before the recent run of weaker-than-expected economic data was released. We didn’t know consumer and homebuilder confidence were declining. And there were far fewer reports of Covid-19 issues.

As the July minutes noted:

“… economic activity continued to expand at a rapid pace through the middle of the year even though capacity constraints were restraining the increase in output in some sectors. Economic growth was expected to remain strong over the second half of the year, supported by the further reopening of the economy, accommodative financial conditions, and easing of supply constraints.”

If that’s not actually going to prove true – or even if it’s seeming like it might not prove true – the Fed might very well change its mind yet again and keep everything in place as-is.

That’s what’s going on in the U.S. Meanwhile, shares of Chinese company Alibaba (BABA) fell another 5.4% today. That’s a record low as the markets lose further confidence in its ability to make money.

Bloomberg writes that:

“Shares dropped after China said it is studying separate proposals to further ensure the rights of drivers who work for online companies and to step up oversight of the live streaming industry.”

While I’m hardly against all regulations, there is a certain point where government control becomes suffocating. And it appears Alibaba has reached that point.

We’re only waiting to see if it will die quickly or slowly.

The World According to REITs

Palantir Technologies (PLTR), a software company that caters to the U.S. intelligence community, says it sees doom up ahead.

Bloomberg reported yesterday that the business is “preparing for another ‘black swan event’ by stockpiling gold bars.” $50.7 million worth, to be specific, so far this month.

If that’s what it sees fit to do, then I sincerely wish it the best. But as for me, I’ll continue with the same strategy that served me well through last year’s bad birdy…

Holding onto quality real estate investment trusts (REITs) that have “stockpiled” enough cash to carry on anyway.

Now, that’s not to say any of the following meet or don’t meet that criteria. These updates, as always, are simply to keep you informed about the general going-ons of REIT-dom.

Starwood Capital Group just upped its offer for Monmouth Real Estate Investment (MNR) to $19.20 per share. That clearly makes it better than Equity Commonwealth’s(EQC) latest offer two days ago of $19 per share. Both are in cash.
Four Corners Property Trust (FCPT) bought a Gerber Collision property in Wisconsin with nine years left to its lease. The purchase price was $1.7 million at a 7% cap rate.
Brixmor Property Group (BRX) says its operating partnership will redeem the entire $500 million collection of 3.250% senior notes due 2023 early next month.

Also – and seriously sorry for all you who are sick to death of my Ashford Hospital Trust (AHT) comments – but look at who made the happy list yesterday.

Miracles clearly can happen.
