The Moments You Can’t Prepare For

Two days ago, as anyone who subscribes to my free e-letter, Intelligent REIT Daily, knows, I walked my second daughter down the aisle.

It was quite the moment and one I couldn’t completely be prepared for. A man can think he’s ready for that experience all he wants to. But when it comes down to actually taking those bittersweet steps, well…

It was filled with so many memories I can’t even count them. I can’t even say they were all at the forefront of my mind, only that they walked with me and my daughter all the same.

There was the time I found out my wife was pregnant again. The one when we learned this second addition to the family was another beautiful little girl. The one when I met her for the first time.

Some of my memories of Lexy were filled with hurt and panic and even frustration, I’ll admit. Anyone who has a child knows they’re hardly perfect – anymore than we are. Nor is the world we all have to interact with every day.

Lexy, being something of a tomboy growing up, had her fair share (and then some) of falls, scrapes, and even hospital visits. I won’t recount all of them here, but I do remember how well she took almost all of them – even better than her mother or me, at times.

She’s one tough cookie, I’ll proudly say.

I could make an analogy here about how we can all learn a lesson from her when it comes to investing: how to take every event in stride, staying the course toward what’s worthwhile no matter what…

Even if that’s with a limp from the occasional bicycle accident…

Or an arm cast for several weeks…

Or down several dollars after some bully at school (poorly named “Angel”) stole your lunch money.

But, really, isn’t that what life in general is all about: finding a way to grow from the bad and enjoy the good for all they’re worth?

So here’s to my Lexy and the reminders of that very lesson she’s given me so many times over – including this past Saturday afternoon.

The World According to REITs

Naturally, there was more that happened over the last three days than wedding rehearsals and last-minute arrangement details and walking beautiful brides down the aisle. A few real estate investment trusts (REITs) are worth mentioning as well.

I’ll get to those in a moment, but I do want to highlight the following facts from all of last week first. For instance, the MSCI U.S. REIT Index rose 3%, a noteworthy gain in general and also compared to the S&P’s 0.4% gain.

U.S. REITs are also ahead year-to-date, up 24.3% versus the S&P 500’s 13.84% and global REITs’ 18.6%. Data centers continue to lead that charge at 5%, with the diversified category coming in second at 4.2%, and lodging and gaming rising 3.7%.

And with that established, here are your three specific newsmakers:

Hannon Armstrong Sustainable Infrastructure Capital (HASI) announced a private offering of $750 million worth of senior unsecured notes due 2026 issued by HAT Holdings I and II, its indirect subsidiaries. The company plans to use the net proceeds to redeem its 5.250% senior green bonds due 2024, for starters.
Power REIT (PW) purchased a 9.35-acre property in Craig County, Oklahoma, through its wholly owned PropCo subsidiary for a total cost of $2.65 million including the renovations it’s agreed to fund for its newest lease – this one with Vinita Cannabis LLC for 20 years.
Extended Stay America (STAY) saw the majority of its shareholders agree to private equity firms Blackstone Groupand Starwood Capital’s takeover offer of $20.50 per share.

That’s it for today since the Daily REITBeat is off for a brief vacation. But don’t doubt for a moment that I won’t be on top of things myself as life gets back to post-wedding normal.
