The White House Is Talking About It Too

Today’s talk seems to be all about inflation, from the White House on down.

On Monday, the Biden administration held a virtual meeting with farming and ranching advocates over rising meat costs. And Biden himself mentioned how “the pound of beef today costs five bucks compared to less than four bucks before the pandemic.”

The fault, he said, lies with the top-four biggest meat processors – Tyson Foods (TSN), Cargill, National Beef, and JBS – which control 85% of the beef industry alone. His solution is to offer further federal loan guarantees to smaller competitors to prompt greater competition.

One way or the other, restaurants are dealing with the consequences as best as they can. With chicken breast prices doubling last year – and even those offerings in shorter supply – they’ve begun pushing dark meat instead.

That’s why Perdue sold 15% more boneless thighs last year and 20% more ground chicken. Its president, Mark McKay, told The Wall Street Journal, “That demand has been spectacular.”

Meanwhile, IKEA owner Ingka Group says it will have to raise its prices by 9% on average this year. It tried to avoid that decision last year, but it’s unavoidable now. Retail Operations Manager Tolga Öncü said the “transport and raw material constraints driving up costs” are too “significant” and “with no anticipated break” in sight.

And then there’s this, as reported by Fox Business:

“Consider that the average price of a used vehicle in the United States in November, according to Edmunds.com, was $29,011 – a dizzying 29% more than just 12 months earlier. And for the first time that anyone can recall, more than half of America’s households have less income than is considered necessary to buy the average-priced used vehicle.”

That’s inflation for ya.

The World According to REITs

So far, none of that is bothering the stock market too badly.

Its inaugural 2022 trading day saw the S&P 500 rise 30.38 points, or 0.64%. The Dow gained 246.76 points, or 0.68%. And the Nasdaq added a much more statistically significant 187.83 points, or 1.20%.

Moreover, futures are all up again today at last check.

Real estate investment trusts (REITs) are back to busy as well. There were a few days there where we only had a few news stories to report.

But we’re up to a healthy seven today, which means the three down below…

Digital Realty Trust (DLR) agreed to acquire a majority stake in Africa’s largest data-center operator, Teraco Data Environments. Current (private equity) owners Permira and Berkshire Partners will reportedly part with 55% of the company for $3.5 billion.
KKR Real Estate Finance Trust (KREF) says it closed on 18 floating-rate loans last quarter worth $1.8 billion in commitments. It also saw record annual originations activity of 37 loans for 2021 that totaled $4.8 billion. And its outstanding funded loan portfolio held about $6.7 billion at year’s end.
Plymouth Industrial REIT (PLYM) gave a Q4 update that leases commenced totaled an aggregate of 6666,598 square feet. These will give it a 22.1% cash-basis jump in rental rates. It also closed on 12 industrial buildings with 2.9 million square feet of space for $194.5 million.
