There’s More to Life Than Krispy Kreme

Breaking news, everyone! Krispy Kreme has filed to go public this year!

Will you take that bite?

It’s tempting, I know, especially if you helped the donut chain’s revenue rise 17% last year to $1.2 billion…

Yet Krispy Kreme still managed to record a net loss of $60.9 million, its third consecutive one – at least – according to Fox Business. And the losses have gotten bigger each of those years.

The IPO could still be worth participating in for all I know. But I do think those details are proof of how there’s always more to know about beneath the glaze.

And no, I’m not just bringing that story up because certain airports might possibly have Krispy Kreme locations. It’s just a good story overall to show how:

Businesses are beginning to emerge again with normal activity, as evidenced by IPO announcements.
There’s always a flipside to every story – and it’s up to you to understand that before reacting.

Take the travel industry, including hotels (which I’m still not recommending at this time). Even as the economy reopens, and people get out and about for personal purposes again…

Companies have been much more cautious. Zoom (ZM) and its alternatives were working fine enough, they’ve seemed to signal earlier this year.

Millionacres reports that corporate trips are still down 70% or more from pre-pandemic levels. But that might be changing, as American Airlines (AAL) and United (UAL) recently reported an uptick in such activity.

The former went so far as to say that 47 of its 50 largest corporate accounts plan to resume traveling this year. And small businesses are increasingly getting ready to get out there too.

In which case, AAL needs to figure out its staffing issues. Stat.

The World According to REITs

I’m still in NYC as I write this, since I’m not leaving until tomorrow. And no, I won’t say whether there are Krispy Kremes in my near future or not.

What I will say is that it’s been an enlightening trip so far. Sadly though, that really is all I can share here at the moment due to time crunches…

Which brings me right to our three stories for this midweek day:

Global Self Storage (SELF) priced an underwritten public offering of approximately 1.12 million common shares at $5.35 each. Gross proceeds are expected to be $6 million, which will be used to fund further acquisitions, joint ventures, and other expansionary purposes.
CatchMark Timber Trust signed a definitive agreement with Roseburg Resources to sell 18,063 acres of prime Oregon timberland. It purchased the property in August 2018 for $88.8 million and will be parting with it for $100 million.
Cedar Realty Trust (CDR) completed its sale of a shopping center in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania for about $89.7 million.

As for yesterday’s top movers, why did Ashford Hospitality Trust (AHT) fall the furthest considering the news I shared at the beginning? That would be because of a secondary sale of 40 million new shares in a convoluted deal with dilutive side effects.

So the market made its opinion of that known, as it tends to do.
