They Are the Champions, My Friend

On February 1, 2015, no fewer than 114.4 million viewers turned on their TVs to see the New England Patriots beat the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX.

That was the previous record-holder for most-watched Super Bowl. But last night’s matchup between the L.A. Rams and Cincinnati Bengals might have topped it.

Those numbers aren’t in yet (that I know of), but estimates are for 117 million. If true, it will be quite the relief for NBC, which is experiencing an extreme shortage of viewers for its ongoing Winter Olympics.

I imagine the companies that ran ads during the game wouldn’t object to that number either. Among those who lined up to pay as much as $7 million for 30-second spots were:

Uber’s (UBER) Uber Eats
Caesars (CZR) Sportsbook and Casinos
TurboTax
Cryptocurrency exchange platform FTX
Anheuser-Busch InBev’s (BUD) Bud Light Seltzer Hard Soda.

In case you didn’t watch the game, didn’t check the score yet, but still want to know, the Rams won. As The Guardian wrote:

Underdogs win Super Bowls by creating turnovers, playing clean, and entering the fourth quarter within a score with a quarterback capable of creating some off-script magic. The Bengals hit on all three on Sunday. The game was right there for Cincinnati to close out.
Then the Rams’ stars took over, and the flaws in a far-from-flawless Cincinnati roster were ultimately exposed – with a dose of help (as ever) from the league’s officials. The Bengals couldn’t tackle Cooper Kupp, at least not in time. And they could not block Aaron Donald, who led a defensive front that wound up dropping Joe Burrow seven times, a Super Bowl record.

So, with that noted, congratulations to L.A. fans. I’m sure you’re still smiling today.

More Non-REIT News to Know About

Now that we have that VIP news covered, let’s move on to more traditional business news…

Like how avocado imports are in danger.

To quote Fox Business on the subject:

Mexico has confirmed that the United States suspended all imports of Mexican avocados following a threat made to a U.S. plant safety inspector [by an alleged drug cartel].
“U.S. health authorities… made the decision after one of their officials… received a threatening message on his official cellphone,” Mexico’s Agriculture Department said in a statement.

Apparently, this isn’t the first time such threats have been made, hence the hardcore response. And, as far as I can see, there isn’t any timeline given about when the suspension will be lifted.

In which case, I hope you all got your fill of guacamole last night. Because it’s going to be pretty expensive from here.

Also, remember how I reported on the planned Spirit Airlines (SAVE)-Frontier (ULCC) merger last week? In that writeup, I mentioned how regulations could potentially cancel that scheduled flight altogether.

I bring it up now because of the related-sector story about Lockheed Martin (LMT) I saw this morning. It just had to abandon its own mergers plans with rocket engine maker Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings (AJRD) after the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) brought successful anti-competitive charges against the proposal.

It’s always interesting to see which deals make it through and which ones don’t. Sometimes, the final approval (or denial) makes perfect sense. And sometimes there seems to be little rhyme or reason to it whatsoever.

The World According to REITs

Even real estate investment trusts (REITs) need a rest after a raucous Super Bowl Sunday. So we only have three updates available from The Daily REITBeat today:

American Finance Trust (AFIN) finished the first stage of a 79-property, $1.3 billion acquisition deal with subsidiaries of CIM Real Estate Finance Trust. This round included 44 shopping centers for $547 million, excluding closing costs.
Whitestone REIT (WSR) says the operating committee arm of its board unanimously approved the end of its shareholder right plans. Originally scheduled to expire mid-May, it’s now no longer in play (as of February 7).
Terreno Realty (TRNO) purchased a 407,000 square-foot property in Hialeah, Florida, for about $73.2 million. While the asset is 100% leased to two tenants at this time, those contracts end in May and September, respectively.

Also, I know I didn’t mention anything about Friday’s market action up ‘til now. But I’ll take this moment to acknowledge the drops we saw, with:

The S&P 500 losing 85.44 points, or 1.90%
The Dow losing 503.53 points, or 1.43%
The Nasdaq losing 394.49 points, or 2.78%.

And yet, even so, certain REITs saw some solid upticks in their individual prices, as shown below.
