I didn’t write a Saturday post last week for obvious reasons. It was Christmas, and I had family to gather with, presents to distribute (and unwrap), and plenty of food to eat.

As much as I love my job, it’s always nice to step back, slow down, and focus on what really matters.

I hope you had a wonderful weekend too, spending time with loved ones and receiving wonderful gifts – especially the kind that can’t be wrapped up nice and neat under the tree. And I sincerely hope that, for those of you who traveled, your flights all connected and you’re safely home now.

With your sanity intact.

Apparently, airports were nothing but busy this week. Busier even then this time in 2019, supporting my idea that everyday Americans are ready to get back to life.

The TSA recorded 2,187,792 passengers on Thursday alone, up from 1,937,123 two years ago.

What was missing, in some cases, was crew to man those booked flights. Alaska Airlines, American (AAL), Delta (DAL), JetBlue (JBLU), Southwest (LUV) and United (UAL) all had to cancel or delay hundreds of flights between them.

Again, I hope you didn’t have to deal with any of that. Perhaps you were instead sharing popcorn with someone at your local movie theater?

If so, you weren’t alone. Spider-Man: No Way Home continued to “stick” with audiences around the world. It’s now netted $1 billion, easily the pandemic-era’s biggest hit.

So movie theaters are back in business.

What else do we have on this last-Monday-of-2021 to-mention list?

Well, Elon Musk gained another detractor in the form of the Communist Party of China. That government filed an official complaint with the U.N. that its space station had to take evasive maneuvers twice – on July 1 and October 21 – this year to avoid “close encounters” with Musk’s satellites.

I assume the U.N. will look into that, but nothing’s been verified so far.

Meanwhile, as we enter into 2022, we’re reminded that China still hasn’t lifted smelting curbs on magnesium. That chemical is used to harden metals, particularly aluminum. And China is responsible for producing 85% of global supply.

Then, when it comes to rare earth minerals – which are used in enormous amounts of electronic devices – China has approved the creation of a mega-corporation. Once again, it controls as much as 85% of the world’s supply of these elements. So this move is supposed to streamline that trade.

“After forming the new company, China’s rare-earth industry will shift from a scattered, small-scale status toward a systematic comprehensive model,” China Rare Earth Industry Association Deputy Chief Chen Zhanheng told The Global Times.

Naturally, this new consolidated entity will be under direct government control.

Also, in news that can, is, and will continue to affect real estate investment trusts (REITs) across the country…

U.S. Census Bureau data now shows that 1% of Californians left for other parts of the country in the past year. Though REITs there should be panicking considering how the state’s population remains at 39.5 million residents.

That’s a record high.

Meanwhile, we all knew evictions would rise after landlords were once again allowed to demand “pay for stay.” And so they have since the federal mandates were struck down a few months ago.

Though not as many as there could have been.

Fox Business reports:

To ease pressure on renters, 21 states and the District of Columbia passed eviction-related legislation in 2021. And a total of 40 states have proposed such laws, according to research from the Pew Charitable Trusts…
The new laws include measures that change how evictions are filed to ensure due process and laws that provide tenants the right to legal counsel or mediation services.

Obviously, that’s good news for some and exhausting news for others.

Up next, and despite the Christmas holiday, we still have enough REIT updates (+2) to fill our expected three slots:

Industrial Logistics Properties (ILPT) agreed to add another six industrial properties to its joint venture with institutional investors. Each one is 100% leased with a weighted average lease term of four years left. The aggregate price is $206 million.
Braemar Hotels & Resorts (BHR) will acquire the 96-room Dorado Beach in Puerto Rico. It will also purchase the income stream attributable to 14 luxury residential units that are adjacent to that Ritz-Carlton operated hotel.
Hudson Pacific Properties (HPP) bought a leasehold interest in a Seattle office building for $119 million. The 197,000 square-foot asset is 100% contracted to Amazon (AMZN) with a remaining 50-year ground lease.
