What Do You Make of This Market?

Santa was stingier than expected yesterday, with both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq dropping – down 4.84 (0.10%) and 89.54 (0.56%), respectively.

Not an intense amount, admittedly, but they still weren’t up. Neither was the Russell 2000, which lost 14.95 points (0.66%).

It’s just one more reminder of how unpredictable this quarter has been.

Only two days ago, MarketWatch published an optimistic piece about how the “Santa Claus rally is off to [the] best start in 20 years.” Declaring how Santa was “handing out gifts on Wall Street,” it went on to note how:

“… in the eight occasions since 1929 when the index has gained at least 1% to start that seven-day session trading period near the end of year, the Santa Claus rally has produced a gain 100% of the time, with an average gain of 3.3%.”

Obviously, that could still happen. But I think I’m going to keep my mouth shut about it one way or the other considering the unusual circumstances we’re surrounded by this time around.

I can’t say they’re entirely negative despite how Apple (AAPL) closed its 16 New York City stores over Omicron. It also locked up retail locations in L.A., D.C., Ohio, Texas, Georgia, and Florida in recent days. Plus, it announced earlier this month that it’s once again delaying any return to the office.

Corporate was supposed to come back to its cubicles in June… and then September… and then February. All of which have been pushed back. And there’s no date set at all right now.

Speaking of Apple, it apparently gave some of its engineers $50,000-$180,000 worth of stock bonuses for Christmas. The move is allegedly meant to keep them from straying over to Meta (FB)…

So, cleverly, those “gifts” vest over four years.

The World According to REITs

Back to what I said about the U.S. economy’s circumstances being at least somewhat positive… just look at air travel over the holidays. And the housing market continues to boom as 2021 comes to a close.

I know there are headlines out there declaring that home price growth slowed in October for the third consecutive month. But this is yet another example of why we need to read through to the details.

In October 2020, home prices surged 19.1% year-over-year. In October 2021, they “only” jumped 18.4%.

That’s still the fifth-largest annual gain on record.

Of course, that data in and of itself is mixed news. On the one hand, sellers are making money hand over fist. On the other, would-be-buyers are being priced out of the market more than ever.

This is the kind of information the market was perfectly happy shrugging off earlier this year. But now’s a different story. And a very confusingly written one at that.

Fortunately for us, what’s much clearer are the following end-of-year real estate investment trust (REIT) actions:

American Tower (AMT) completed its takeover of CoreSite Realty following the closing of its tender offer for all outstanding shares of the acquired company.
Diversified Healthcare Trust (DHC) signed an agreement for a global institutional investor to purchase an equity interest in one of its existing joint ventures. The previously formed deal owns a two-building life-science complex in Boston, Massachusetts. And the new party will pay DHC $378 million for a 35% stake. That will leave the healthcare REIT with a 20% equity interest.
Four Corners Property Trust (FCPT) purchased two WellNow Urgent Care properties in New York for $5.4 million.

That’s it for today, the last full market day of 2021…
