Why You Shouldn’t Fear a 10% Correction

MarketWatch published an opinion piece yesterday evening: “Nasdaq Near a 10% Correction Isn’t the Sell Signal You Probably Think It Is.” In it, Mark Hulbert of Hulbert Ratings argues that:

There’s nothing magical about a stock index hitting the 10% decline that constitutes what Wall Street considers to be a correction. So we need to stop treating this 10% mark as meaningful. It isn’t.
The odds that stocks will rise are no different after a 10% decline than they are before. This is important to keep in mind now that the Nasdaq Composite Index… is losing ground quickly, down 2.5% on [January 13] alone and off 7.8% from its closing high on November 19, 2021.

Hardly uninformed, Hulbert lays out his case by analyzing every time since 1928 when ”the S&P 500… (or its predecessor index) dropped at least 10% from a prior high.” And while sometimes that kind of negative activity preceded a bear market, sometimes it didn’t.

Sometimes, the market made an almost immediate U-turn.

Again, he published that after yesterday’s close, so he was well aware the markets dropped. It wasn’t just the Nasdaq, which incidentally declined 381.58 points. The S&P 500 lost 67.32 points, or 1.42%; and the Dow fell 176.70 points, or 0.49%.

Yet his conclusion remains: “If you’re backward-looking, you can bemoan a 10% decline. But as an investor, looking forward is what you want to do.”

Overall, I’d say that’s solid advice. You can take it too far, obviously (which I don’t think Hulbert advocates). Ultimately though, I’d say the past is to be studied, the future is to be estimated… and the present is to be utilized as intelligently as possible.

Which means setting aside fear (and greed) in favor of the facts.

The World According to REITs

So here are some more facts for you…

A new Conference Board survey indicates that 55% of U.S. CEOs expect high inflation to continue through mid-2023. At least. Though they’re more worried about finding workers.

We’ve also learned that the December producer price index rose by a record 9.7% year-over-year, with month-over-month prices climbing 0.2%.

And Facebook/Meta (FB) continues to battle hard feelings in Europe. It now has to deal with a $3.1 billion class action lawsuit in the U.K. for breach of competition law. According to the filing, Meta has taken untoward advantage of users by profiting enormously from their personal and private data.

Yet Google/Alphabet (GOOG) – which also offers “free” services for a hefty price – continues to sit pretty over there. It just spent $1 billion on a London office building it’s been renting out.

Double-standards aside, that move should be welcome to office real estate investment trusts (REITs) everywhere. Despite how Google still has most employees working from home, it clearly sees great value in more traditional workplace spaces.

Speaking of REITs…

American Campus Communities (ACC) formed a joint venture concerning its existing eight-property Arizona State University student housing portfolio. Under this new structure, it will maintain a 55% stake when the full deal closes by late 2022 or early 2023.
Summit Hotel Properties (INN) finished an initial closing of its own joint-venture activity to acquire 27 hotels. This involves 3,533 guestrooms and two parking structures for $822 million.
Spirit Realty Capital (SRC) upsized an 8.2 million-share public offering at $47.60 each to raise $390.32 million in gross proceeds. Cash results will go to its operating partnership for future acquisitions and general corporate purposes.
