Stay Calm and Insist on Quality

Well, yesterday was something to talk about. That’s for sure. And the markets felt it to some degree, though not nearly as much as they could have.

They still ended with gains across the board, deciding that a Democrat-controlled combination of executive and legislative branches isn’t such a bad thing after all.

As per Bloomberg:

“Global markets are showing resilience after a day of violence rocked the U.S. Capitol, with investors firmly focused on the prospect for more economic stimulus and the likelihood that calm will prevail as Joe Biden takes the presidency. S&P 500 futures were up 0.1%, and most stock benchmarks across Asia and Europe were in the green.”

Meanwhile, Yahoo! Finance’s Myles Udland put it this way:

“… the biggest takeaway for investors is that, after plenty of hand-wringing over what a ‘Blue Wave’ scenario could mean for markets in 2021 and beyond, the answer is good news.”

That’s because, the way they see it (or at least the way he sees they see it), a Biden administration with a slight majority has the power to push through all the economic stimulus it’s been promising without being able to deliver on more radical legislation like the Green New Deal.

Taken at face value, that viewpoint means the Nasdaq, at least, was celebrating the very thing it was previously panicking over. In which case, it’s proof positive that the markets are far too emotion-driven in the short-term.

People who let their fear take over earlier this week and sold their tech shares went on to quickly pay for their short-term mentalities. And while I firmly maintain those stocks are overpriced and begging for a correction, I’m going to use this latest volatility as an opportunity to offer this advice:

If you’re that shaky about an investment that a single round of news is going to decimate your confidence in it, you shouldn’t be in it to begin with.

Ditch the hype. Stick with quality.

It might not look as “cool” in the moment, but it also doesn’t burn nearly so badly – or at all – when things get too hot.

Netstreit (NTST) saw Scotiabank initiate coverage on it with a Sector Outperform rating and a $21 price target.
Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust (PEI) signed on grocery-store Aldi for a 21,000 square-foot space, one more step toward expanding more profitable portfolio opportunities – which, in this case, means leaning away from its traditional focus on malls.
Medical Properties Trust (MPW) priced 32 million shares of a secondary offering at $20.05 each. It plans to use the net proceeds to purchase its just announced sale-leaseback acquisition of behavioral health facilities in the U.K. for about £800 million (or just under $1.09 billion) from Priory Group.
