The Bubble Grows Some More

At the risk of sounding ridiculously repetitive, the markets are up yet again, fully invested in the positive side of a one-party rule. Apparently, there’s no more reason to fear ever again.

I’m not saying that to disparage anyone’s opinion. And I don’t mean to be the naysayer in the room. But I can’t look at the Nasdaq closing above 13,000 for the first time yesterday – with the Dow and S&P 500 climbing as well – as an out-and-out reason to celebrate.

When is it going to stop?

Not anytime soon, according to Fundstrat’s Tom Lee, who told CNBC that the continuing rise of clarity in D.C. and the amount of cash so many publicly traded companies have on their hands is a positive indicator:

“If we look at just the first few days of this year, the leadership has come from things energy and the cyclicals, including financials and industrials, or even discretionary excluding Amazon. I think that’s kind of a precursor to what the full year will look like.”

In addition, CNBC reports, “The strategist… said that stocks ‘could make a really big move’ in the coming weeks as the level of fear in the market declines.”

Global strategist Gary Schlossberg over at Wells Fargo Investment Institute is overall optimistic as well, offering these thoughts:

“We think that some of the optimism will be manifested to some extent by improved earnings growth, and maybe the market is pricing in some of that as well of late. But we still think that gives the market some added mileage.”

Maybe they’re right. Maybe they’re wrong. Maybe this bull will run the whole year long. It’s certainly making its mark now, as evidenced by a new man taking the top spot for world’s richest person.

Yesterday’s action on the Nasdaq bumped Tesla (TSLA) founder Elon Musk’s net worth up past $185 billion, making Jeff Bezos the poor man out at only around $184 billion.

To quote another CNBC article, “Musk’s wealth surge over the past year marks the fastest rise to the top of the rich list in history – and marks a dramatic financial turnaround for the famed entrepreneur.”

I’ve got nothing against the guy. More power to him with his visionary efforts, in my opinion. And who knows? He might prove to be an exception to the rule that fast money doesn’t last.

But as for me, as tempting as those billions might be, I’d rather make my mere millions in safe and secure ways based on solid production instead of speculation.

Speaking of speculation, I just read an article on The Real Deal explaining that Ashford Hospitality Trust (AHT) secured a $350 million loan facility to see it through the pandemic that’s decimated the travel and leisure industry. The article states that AHT will “pay 16% interest in the first two years and 14% in the third, plus exit fees that could bring the total payback cost to nearly $600 million.”

The lender is Oaktree Capital Management, which agreed to supply Ashford an initial $200 million and up to $150 million more, according to a disclosure statement filed with the SEC.

Talk about an expensive life preserver! I’m honestly not sure who gets the best deal – the hotel REIT or the financial firm.

But I do know the lodging sector is downright risky, and I would be hard-pressed to put more money into it from an investor’s perspective.

EPR Properties (EPR) gave a series of important business updates for its just-completed Q4, including an increase in its quarterly cash collection levels and the sale of a portfolio of properties.
Federal Realty Investment Trust (FRT) sold its Shops at Sunset Place in South Miami along with of two more traditional shopping centers – one located in D.C. and the other in Chapel Hill, North Carolina – for atotal gross proceeds of $170 million.
Lamar Media (LAMR) priced a private placement worth $550 million in 3.625% senior notes due 2031 for the purpose of helping to redeem all its outstanding 5.75% senior notes due 2026.
